1,817 flood victims currently seeking shelter at 22 relief centres nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,817 victims from 488 families are currently seeking shelter at 22 flood relief centres nationwide.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said as at 4pm, six states are affected by flood, namely Selangor, Kelantan, Johor, Kedah, Penang and Melaka.

"At 10pm last night, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a 'continuous rain' warning until today for Kelantan and Terengganu. The areas that would potentially be impacted are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan, and Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun in Terengganu.

"MetMalaysia also issued a 'thunderstorm' warning for Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Sarawak. This could contribute to the current flood situation, especially in the west coast of the peninsular Malaysia," the agency said in a statement.

Nadma said as of 3pm, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) have issued a possible flash flood preparedness notice for the next 12 hours for Johor (Batu Pahat, Johor Baru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi), Terengganu (Dungun), Kedah (Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Yan), Sabah ( Papar, Tuaran), Sarawak and Selangor (Klang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Petaling Sepang).

"The flood could occur earlier or later than the expected time and the warning was issued to enable the residents, especially in the expected areas, to be aware and prepared.

"DID have also sent pumps to areas in Meru, Klang, to help expedite the flow of water from the flooded areas," it said.

It said since the flood water in the residential areas is still high, the effort would hopefully help the draining process.

"Efforts by the state government in support of DID will continue in other areas affected by the same issue. In addition, as of 6pm, two districts in Kelantan, namely Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah, are affected by flood."

Nadma also said that the water level at the Sungai Siam station in Kampung Sungai Siam in the Sungai Johor basin is expected to breach the dangerous level by 0.02 metre at 6pm.

"Residents in low lying areas are asked to be prepared and to follow instructions if ordered to move. At at 6pm, three relief centres were activated in Segamat," said Nadma.
