Three areas in Putrajaya hit by flash floods

PUTRAJAYA: At least three areas in the country's federal administrative capital were hit by flash floods due to heavy rains and clogged drains today.

It is learnt that excessive rainfall from heavy downpours could not flow freely because of the clogged drainage.

Among the locations affected by the flash floods at 4.20pm included Persiaran Seri Perdana and near the residential area of the chief secretary to the government in Presint 10, the health clinic in Presint 9 as well as areas around Presint 11A.

The water, however, receded about 30 minutes later following works to clean and clear the drainage.

Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Afizi Zolkifli said checks at affected locations showed the water rose as high as 30cm.

He said preliminary checks showed the flash floods were triggered by heavy downpours and clogged drainage.

"A team of 20 rescuers from the station in Presint 7 was deployed to the affected locations to clean the clogged drainage. Most of the waste that prevented the water from flowing smoothly was dried leaves," he told Berita Harian.

A resident at Presint 11, Mahathir Hasnan, 28, said the water rose immediately within an hour after the rain started to fall at about 3pm.

"We panicked when water started bursting out of the drainage one hour after it started raining. However, the water immediately receded after that.

"I have relocated most of my furniture and electrical items to the upper floor of the house as I am worried that the water will rise again later," he said.

His neighbour Noor Rahman Mohd Nordin, 55, said the incident is the third time flash floods had occurred since 2003.

"The flash floods this time around is quite bad since there was a car belonging to a neighbour that was inundated by water," he said.
