Covid-19 under control, safe to go out to vote on Saturday: Khairy

SUNGAI BULOH: The Covid-19 situation in the country is under control and it is safe to go out to cast your votes on Saturday, caretaker Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin told Malaysians today.

"New infections have reduced by 13.4 per cent last week, between Nov 6 and Nov 12, compared to the previous week.I had checked with the deputy director-general and communicable diseases experts who also said that hospital admissions had also plateaued.

"Although there is a slight increase in fatality rate at 0.07 per cent, (which is) a comparison for the same week, that's well below the three per cent that we set.

"As such, I am confident that the Covid-19 situation in the country is under control. The small wave has peaked, please feel safe to go out to vote," he told a press conference at Sungai Buloh Hospital, here, today.

He however urged Malaysians to continue to be vigilant, with just days left before the polling day.

"We want to remind Malaysians to continue to be vigilant, particularly towards this weekend. It is now the final lap for election campaigns, it may get crowded at ceramahs, and also on the voting day at the polling centres."

Khairy also hinted that the country "is closer towards the endemicity phase".

"We are probably at the end of the transition into the endemicity phase, closer towards endemicity.

"Although new infection numbers are going up and down, and there are new waves from time to time, it is very much under control. It's safe to go out to vote as we are heading to endemicity very, very soon," he said.

Meanwhile, he also revealed that all Covid-19 patients who had taken Paxlovid, the anti-viral pill, recovered from the infections.

"There are no death cases reported in the community. All the high-risk Covid-19 cases who received free Paxlovid from the clinic have recovered."
