GE15: All eyes on Istana Negara

KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes are on Istana Negara today where top political leaders are expected to present their prime minister candidate as well as the pooled support to form the federal government.

As of press time, no political leaders had been spotted at the palace.

Comptroller of the Istana Negara Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin yesterday in a statement said coalition and party leaders needed to submit the names and number Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah through a statutory declaration before 2pm.

This came after the Election Commissioner declared that no political parties command a simple majority to form the next federal government after the 15th General Election.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won 82 parliamentary seats, Periktan Nasional (PN) that led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin secured 73 seats, followed by Barisan Nasional (BN) that won 30 seats.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg won 22 seats, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) with six seats, Parti Warisan Sabah with three seats, Parti Bangsa Malaysia secured one seat and two independent candidates won.

Muhyiddin said he has the number to be the next prime minister after PN received the support from GPS, GRS and BN.

This was however refuted by BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who said he had not spoken to either GPS or PN on any sort of collaboration.

Anwar also claimed to have a simple majority but did not reveal the number or the parties in question which had agreed to support the coalition.
