Tun M congratulates Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has congratulated Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his recent appointment as Malaysia's prime minister.

The 97-year-old politician conveyed his well wishes to Anwar through his Twitter account.

"I say my congratulations to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his appointment as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia. All the best," Dr Mahathir said.

Anwar was yesterday sworn in as the country's 10th prime minister after days of political impasse which resulted in a hung parliament. His appointment comes after a meeting by the Conference of Rulers, which saw the King exercising his discretion bestowed by the Federal Constitution under Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a).

Dr Mahathir, who is also Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman, saw his party and coalition lose all 125 seats it contested in the recent 15th General Election (GE15).

This embarrassing defeat also saw Dr Mahathir losing his deposit in his bid to defend his Langkawi parliamentary seat as he only managed to secure 4,566 votes. Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah of Perikatan Nasional (PN) won the seat with a 13,518-vote majority.

In earlier statements, Dr Mahathir said he was saddened by the results but respected the choice made by the people.
