Council of Churches Malaysia hails call by Council of Rulers for politicians to stop stoking racial, religious issues

KUALA LUMPUR: The Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM) has welcomed the call by the Council of Rulers for politicians to stop using racial or religious issues to instigate or incite the public.

In a statement, CCM said decrees of the Majesties for the government to instil the spirit of equality among the people and to emphasise the Rukun Negara as the basis of Malaysian society was also timely and vital for the full functioning of the Malaysian polity under a unity government.

"In the past few years, we have seen how the leadership and counsel of Their Majesties, the Malay Rulers, individually, and jointly as the Council of Rulers have ameliorated and moderated the excesses of acrimonious party politics in Malaysia.

"The role and wise leadership especially by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in promoting politics of reconciliation and unity to replace toxic politics has borne much fruit in preparing Malaysia for a phase of coalition politics in the country.

"The prayers of the churches in the CCM are with the nation, their Majesties and the various branches of the government of Malaysia. God bless our Rulers and our government," said its secretary Jonathan Jesudas.

Yesterday, Negri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir had decreed that no leader should bring up issues of race and religion that aimed at inciting the people.

Tuanku Muhriz, who chaired the 260th Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara, said he wanted the new federal government to instil the spirit of togetherness among Malaysians of various religious, racial and cultural backgrounds.

In a statement released by Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, Tuanku Muhriz also urged the new government to use any opportunity to do its best to bring the country to greater heights.
