Anwar calls for an end to culture of presenting souvenirs to the PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for an end to the culture of presenting souvenirs to the prime minister.

Via his Twitter feed today, the prime minister said while he appreciated the intention behind doing so, the move can place an unnecessary burden on the people.

"I wish to remind all quarters to not present any souvenirs to me. This practice has to be stopped.

"While I appreciate the intention, this does not suit the ethics of management and leadership and also places a burden on the people," he said, referring to the practice of presenting souvenirs to the prime minister as well as VIPs during official events.

Anwar has already previously announced a slew of departures from the status quo since assuming office as the country's 10th prime minister.

He recently refused to sanction the purchase of a brand new RM1.35 million Mercedes Benz S-class for the prime minister's use, preferring instead to use his Toyota Camry.

On the government administration front, Anwar had earlier this week said there will be no more government contracts awarded without tender. He also added that he would not allow any of his family members or close friends to benefit from government-related projects.
