Sungai Golok bustling with cross-border activities despite monsoon season

RANTAU PANJANG: Despite the wet season, cross-border activities along Sungai Golok continue as usual.

Villagers living along the riverbank are seen crossing over the Thai border at Sungai Golok town, either to visit relatives or for other reasons.

Joining them are outsiders, who spend the weekend shopping at the border town.

A check today showed many people using several illegal jetties here to cross over to the sub-province town.

Among the jetties frequently used by travellers are the Paung and Gergaji jetties.

A boat operator, who wanted to be known only as Mat, said boat operators were happy that they could resume their work.

"Many of us lost our income due to the Covid-19 pandemic and some of us even decided to cease the boat passenger service.

"Praise be to God, after Malaysia and Thailand announced the relaxation of border activities, we are able to earn again.

"But we have to follow certain 'conditions' such as not to involve ourselves in any negative activity," said the 52-year-old today.

Although Malaysian and Thai nationals are allowed to cross the border, they are closely monitored by both countries' border authorities.
