Fahmi: TikTok commits to axing provocative and extremist content

KUALA LUMPUR: Social platform TikTok has given its commitment to forge strategic cooperation with the Digital Communications Ministry to eradicate the spread of provocative and extremist content on social media.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the cooperation through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was aimed to swiftly curb and combat the dissemination of negative content that could disrupt the country's harmony.

"InsyaAllah, I will hold several more series of discussions with other social media platform providers to ensure that this issue is tackled holistically and quickly," he said in a statement today.

Fahmi said the existence of misleading, fake, provocative and extremist content on social media was one of the issues brought up in the special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya earlier today.

The government, he said, would not tolerate content that touches on the sensitivity and position of the royal institution as well as rulers, religion and race on social media.

He added a meeting with the ministry, TikTok and MCMC was subsequently held to air the concern and severity as well as impact of such content which was widespread among the multi diverse and harmonious Malaysian society.
