No more official gifts for me, says Nga

PUTRAJAYA: Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming is doing away with the gift-giving culture during official events for the ministry.

Nga, a first-time minister, also aims to inculcate traditional Malay values, such as being courteous and thrifty; and uphold the Rukun Negara principles during his stint.

He made the announcement after clocking in for duty at 8.50am today at the ministry, here, today.

"It will be meaningful to save the money from buying gifts and donate to those in need instead.

"My focus now will be to improve our fundamental services, such as waste management, cleaning up the drains, because these issues are close to the people's hearts.

"With the northeast monsoon coming, we will also boost the readiness of our firemen and rescue services to provide timely assistance to flood victims," he told reporters, here, today.

Nga also lauded the cabinet's decision yesterday for ministers to take a 20 per cent pay cut and said the move aimed to show the government's solidarity for the people during tough times.

Nga, 50, was born in Kota Baru, Kelantan. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Malaya and served as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.

After winning the Kepayang state seat in the recent polls, Nga is currently the longest-serving state assemblyman in Perak, namely for six terms.

He was also the state housing and local government exco for Perak in 2008 and was appointed as the deputy speaker of Dewan Rakyat in 2018.
