Penang council to continue with tyre clamping

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council will continue to enforce tyre clamping against illegally parked vehicles on the island.

This comes in the wake of a Court of Appeal decision that the Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) tyre-clamping law was invalid as it goes against the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

This means that the MPKB can no longer clamp vehicles in parking spaces but only issue compound notices.

Penang council mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang told the New Straits Times that they were using a different section under the Road Transport Act to clamp vehicles parked illegally.

"We are using Section 48 under the Road Transport Act to clamp vehicles parked illegally. As such, we will continue with this exercise (tyre clamping)," said Yew.
