KOTA BARU: A seven-year-old boy was found drowned in an irrigation canal at Kampung Jambu Merah near Melor yesterday.
Muhammad Uwais Arsyad Mohd Safwan was catching fish with his family members when the incident happened.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said the victim had gone into the canal with his parents, two brothers and two cousins about 5pm.
"According to the victim's father, his son had asked to join him in the canal and he had allowed it.
"Several minutes later, the father realised his son had gone missing. He then found his son floating nearby.
"He then rushed his son to the Mahligai health clinic for checks. The boy was pronounced dead while being treated at the clinic at about 5.50pm," he said in a statement.
Rosli said the boy's body was sent to Raja Perempuan Zainab II hospital in Kota Baru for a post-mortem.
"The result of the post-mortem showed that the boy had drowned." he said.
