Dengue cases in Johor go up during monsoon season

JOHOR BARU: Dengue cases in Johor have jumped by over 13 per cent in the monsoon season with 172 cases.

State Health and Unity Committee chairman, Ling Tian Soon said figures had gone up by 20 infections compared to 152 cases the week before.

He said from the number of cases reported throughout last week, 51 cases (29.7 per cent) were from outbreak locations, while, while 121 cases (70.3 per cent) were from non-epidemic spots.

Ling revealed that Johor Baru had the highest number of cases with 139 cases, followed by Kulai (11 cases), Kota Tinggi (6 cases), Kluang (5 cases), Pontian (3 cases), while Batu Pahat, Tangkak and Muar had two cases respectively.

He also revealed that Mersing and Segamat had one respective case each.

"Six districts reported an increase in cases last week compared to the week before, the six districts are Johor Baru, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi and Tangkak.

"Cumulative cases stood at 3,772 cases and recorded an increase of 124.9 per cent, compared to the same period last year which saw infections at 1,677 cases.

"From the number of cases that had been reported, 1,339 cases were from outbreak locations and 2,433 cases were from the non-epidemic locality," said Ling today.

He said this week there were 17 new outbreak localities reported in the state, in Johor Baru (16 locations) and Kluang (one spot).

According to Ling, there are 50 active outbreak locations reported with Johor Baru with 49 cases and Kulai with a sole case.

The accumulated number of epidemic locations in the state for this year until last week stood at 437 compared to 162 during the same period last year which represents an increase of 169.8 per cent.

"There has been one death reported during the epidemic week for the whole state of Johor. The total number of fatal Dengue cases to date are four cases compared to five cases last year during the same period.

"The people of Johor have been advised to look after the cleanliness of their surrounding areas and carry out cleaning activities to make sure there are no potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes at their homes and workplace," said Ling.

Ling said enforcement carried out against dengue breeding spots saw 4,640 compounds being issued valued at RM2.36 million, out of which 68.5 per cent had been paid.
