1 dead, child injured in van and express bus collision in Gua Musang-Kuala Krai route

GUA MUSANG: A man died in an accident between a van and an express bus at Km 24 Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai here yesterday (Dec 21).

The deceased has been identified as Mohd Rizuan Ishak, 43, who was driving the van. He died on the spot after being pinned in the driver's seat.

The accident at about 3.30pm, also caused a passenger in the express bus, Muhamad Ihtisyam Muazam Shaldris, 11, to suffer a broken right cheekbone.

He is currently being treated at the Gua Musang Hospital.

The bus driver and remaining 31 passengers in the bus escaped unhurt.

Gua Musang district police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the accident happened when the driver of the van, which was heading towards Kuala Krai from Gua Musang was believed to have lost control of the vehicle. The van went into the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the express bus, which came from Klang and was heading to Kubang Kerian.

"The express bus tried to avoid the other vehicle, but the van which was carrying electronic equipment was too close. It led to a collision where both drivers had lost control of their vehicles before veering to the right side of the road heading towards Kuala Krai.

"The van driver was killed instantly and his body was taken to the Gua Musang Hospital for post-mortem.

"A child on the bus ended up getting injured as he suffered a broken right cheekbone. He is receiving medical treatment at the same hospital.

"When the accident happened, the road was wet and slippery, and it was drizzling," he said.

The case is being investigated Under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving resulting in fatality. Investigations are still ongoing," he said.
