Police seize 17 m-cycles in operation at Penang Bridge

BUTTERWORTH: Seventeen motorcycles were seized in an operation at the Penang Bridge motorcycle lane last night.

In a statement on Facebook, Penang police said the integrated operation involving the police, the Road Transport Department (RTD) and state Department of Environment was carried out from 9pm yesterday to 2am today.

"The operation conducted ahead of the New Year's Eve celebration saw the seizure of 17 motorcycles under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. A total of 187 summonses were issued for various traffic offences."

The RTD also issued 150 summonses for various offences, while 10 vehicle owners received a notice under Section 48A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (noise emission).

The operation led by Penang Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Superintendent Zafri Zolkapli will continue until tomorrow morning to curb illegal racing.

In another Facebook post, the Southwest district police headquarters said two men were detained during Op Parkir Haram near the Sultan Azlan Shah Highway in Bayan Baru, near here, on Thursday night.

The operation, from 8pm to 11pm, was carried out after police discovered individuals illegally collecting parking fees for vehicles parked on the roadside.

"Two men in their 30s were remanded to assist investigations under Section 50 (3) of the Road Transport Act 1987," the Facebook post read.
