500 Rela members in border areas to get firearms

KAJANG: Some 500 People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) who will be deployed to help the General Operations Force in borders areas will be provided with firearms, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

"The firearms are kept at a weapons warehouse. When there's a need for Rela members to use firearms for an operation, they will be granted permission to use it.

"They will need to return the firearms to the warehouse after the operation."

He said this after his first official visit to the National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) headquarters today.

On Dec 15, he said 500 Rela members would be deployed to Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, Selangor and Perlis starting January.

He said the pilot project would involve 90 members.
