New ambassador to Indonesia to be announced soon

SEPANG: The government has a candidate to be Malaysia's ambassador to Indonesia.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the appointment would be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim "soon".

"The issue of appointment and the candidate for Malaysia's ambassador to Indonesia is in its final stages. It will be announced soon.

"We already have a candidate, which the prime minister will announce, and there will be a swearing in ceremony in Malaysia," he said at a press conference here, today.

Former Pasir Salak member of parliament Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman was named ambassador to Indonesia in May last year.

He was supposed to replace senior diplomat Zainal Abidin Bakar, who was made ambassador to Indonesia in 2018.

But Tajuddin's appointment caused an uproar, with many questioning his capabilities.

He was dropped just a few weeks after his appointment was announced.
