New RM5 monthly broadband Internet plan for the needy announced

KOTA BARU: The Communications and Digital Ministry today announced a new broadband Internet package with a monthly charge of RM5.

Its minister Fahmi Fadzil said during his 40-minute live session with local radio station 'KELANTANfm' that the new package would benefit many users, especially the low-income group and Persons With Disabilities (PWD).

"In less than a week, the ministry will introduce the new package, cheaper than the existing package and with higher Internet speed.

"We decided to reduce the monthly charge. The new package will cost RM5 per month instead of the current package's RM10.

"Our target group will be those from the B40 (bottom 40 income group), the elderly and PWD aged between 12 and 30."

Fahmi, who was on a working visit to Kelantan, said the ministry also allocated RM1 million for Kelantan and Terengganu -- states which have been affected by floods.

"Kelantan will get RM500,000, as well as other donations from several communication companies. Terengganu will also receive same amount tomorrow."

Speaking at a press conference later, Fahmi said 100 of the 1,200 communication towers in Kelantan have been affected in the recent floods.

However, he said the damaged structures had been repaired and were operating as usual.

"This morning, l visited a communication tower in Kampung Bendang Pak Yong, Tumpat and was informed that Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had upgraded the tower using the multi-operator core network concept.

"Tenaga Nasional Bhd had also raised the sites of nine substations in the surrounding area to ensure the electric supply will not be affected during floods,."
