5 tonnes of durians snapped up in 2 hours

KOTA BHARU: Five tonnes of durians were snapped up in just less than two hours at Kampung Semat Jal, Wakaf Baru here, thanks to a couple's interesting method of promoting the king of fruits.

The husband-and-wife sellers, Shahmi Azani Mohd Tanazi, 30, and Saidatul Fatini Shamsudin, 30, sell durians by the basket, with prices ranging betweenfrom RM10, RM25, RM40 and RM50.

Shahmi said they started selling the durian at around 10.30am and finished within two hours or less.

"We sell the durian off the back of the lorry. Customers usually bring their own baskets and fill them to their hearts' content.

"The durian kampung or durian kahwin is sold between RM10 and RM25 per basket, and graded durians such as Musang King, D24/XO, Udang Merah, IOI and Tekka the are priced at RM40 and above," he said when met at the site where they sell their durians today (Jan 20).

He said baskets in different colours signified the prices; for example, blue basket is tagged at RM10 while the grey basket carries a price of RM25.

This, he said, would ease the whole process as it could get quite hectic selling the king of fruit wholesale.

"The idea to sell durians in baskets came from my wife, so that people get the opportunity to buy durians without worries because usually durians are associated with high, inflated prices," he said.

Shahmi started selling durians 15 years ago and currently offers 13 different types of durians he sourced from Raub, Pahang.

Apart from the festive season factor, the king of fruit is in high demand because prices have come down of late, citing Musang King, previously sold at RM35 per kg and now available at RM22 per kg.

One of his customers, Siti Esah Ismail, 69, said she was willing to come all the way from Kok Lanas in Ketereh just to buy durians because of much cheaper prices.

"We bought a lot as a fete for the children and other family members returning home during the upcoming extended festive weekend," she said.
