Five-year-old girl drowns in Ulu Legong hot spring pool

BALING: A five-year-old girl drowned at the Hot Spring Pool Recreation Center in Ulu Legong, here yesterday.

Baling District Police Chief, Superintendent Shamsudin Mamat said the department received information from Baling Hospital on the incident at 12.10 midnight, yesterday.

He said the five-year-old had gone to the recreation centre on Saturday at 8pm with her family.

"Initially, the child was taking a dip in the children's pool. The victim then disappeared from the sight of her family members.

"Her family then looked for the victim around the pool but failed to find her.

"However, some 15 minutes later, the child was found unconscious in the adult swimming pool by visitors who were taking a dip there," he said when contacted today.

Shamsudin said the victim was then retrieved from the adult swimming pool at about 9.40pm with initial first aid being provided by visitors.

He said the victim's next of kin called an ambulance, with the five-year-old being sent to Baling Hospital for treatment.

"A medical officer then confirmed that the victim had died on arrival at the hospital at 11.20pm. A post-mortem was performed at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital Alor Star yesterday.

Shamsudin said the autopsy results found that the victim died from drowning.

He said the case was investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children's Act 2001 for neglecting a child. If convicted, a fine not more than RM20,000 or a jail term not exceeding 10 years or both awaits offenders.
