Rompin floods improve, only one relief centre still open

KUANTAN: The flood situation in Rompin - the only district affected by floods in Pahang - has improved, with only one relief centre open today.

A state Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman said as of 7pm, 27 people from eight families remained at the SK Denai relief centre compared to 219 at three relief centres at 8am today.

"The Kampung Setajam and Kampung Jawa relief centres were closed at noon today as the remaining victims were allowed to return home in stages after the flood waters in their settlements completely receded.

"Heavy rain across Rompin had forced six relief centres to be opened and currently only SK Denai is still operating. The victims will be allowed to return home tomorrow if the weather continues to improve," he said.

He said the major rivers in the district were slowly returning to its normal levels except for Sungai Keratong in Rompin, which remained above the 23m danger mark when it recorded a water level of 23.15m

Rompin was hit by floods on Jan 24 following continuous heavy rain and the first relief centre at Bandar Perwira Jaya was opened about 8.30am the same day and while the other relief centres were opened on Jan 25.
