KJ eyes upcoming S'gor state elections to make political comeback

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has indicated that he is looking at making a political comeback by contesting in the upcoming state election in Selangor.

Khairy said he believes the state is the "political epicentre" of the country. He said he is looking at building a new political platform in the state.

He was asked if he was making a comeback in politics and in what form.

"It is something that I am considering (making a comeback).

"I have made it known to the public that I have left Negri Sembilan and migrated to Selangor. I think this is the political epicentre of Malaysia. Here (Selangor) is where the action is.

"I think I's like to build my new political base here," he said in an interview with Channel NewsAsia today.

He also said he was weighing his options on either joining another party or setting up an entirely new party.

"The 'political market' is quite saturated now, so setting up a political party is an option, and joining an existing political party is another option.

"I would like to bide my time and see what makes more sense," he said.

Khairy admitted that he regrets Umno's decision to sack him, pointing out that he had been with the party for 23 years.

"As far as politics is concerned, that party, Umno, was everything to me. To see it descend to what it is today is both tragic and sad."

Khairy shared that it would be quite tough for Umno to bounce back from its "downward" trajectory.

"I do believe it will be difficult for Umno to come back from this, this is not because the party sacked me, but because the entire trajectory of Umno is downwards," he said, adding the party now only has 26 parliamentary seats and is still reluctant to reform.

He a did not rule out the possibility of returning to Umno one day, but noted it needs to be a "significantly different party"' before he considers such a move.

"If I go back to the 'current' Umno, it would be a colossal waste of time," he said.

Earlier today, Khairy said he will not appeal against his sacking because it is pointless in doing so.

In an interview with BFM's morning programme, Khairy stressed that appealing against the action meted out to him was pointless because the same people who booted him out remain with the party.

On Friday,Umno had sacked Khairy and former Selangor Umno liaison committee chief Tan Sri Noh Omar for violating the party's constitution during the 15th General Election.
