Food operators thrilled with higher number of patrons, thanks to Menu Rahmah

KUALA LUMPUR: A week into the Menu Rahmah initiative, restaurant operators jump with glee as more patrons come gushing in.

Not only are their customers ordering the Menu Rahmah, but they are also seeing an increased uptake for normal-priced food.

Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said his chain of mamak restaurants were seeing no less than 50 orders of the Menu Rahmah per day in all his 15 outlets since its launch.

Jawahar said they were also seeing three to five per cent increase in sales every day.

"People are not coming in only because of the Menu Rahmah but they are also coming in for other dishes and there has been an improvement in sales.

He said they were not operating at a loss even though the original price of the menu was around RM9 as the increased sales would supplement the costs.

Jawahar added that they would not compromise with the quality of the dish despite it being sold at a cheaper price.

"Every day, I will ask my members (Presma) whether they have joined the Menu Rahmah programme. The numbers are improving," he said.

Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad Managing Director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said they received more than 100 patrons daily across all 28 outlets, thanks to the all-day offering with meals as cheap as RM2.50.

"Breakfast includes a plate of fried mee and three slices of 'pencuci mulut' (desserts) for the price stated.

"Our plate of rice with a side dish of chicken or fish and vegetables is priced at RM 4.90," he said.

Ameer said Mydin would be distributing 5,000 Menu Rahmah in food packets, in collaboration with the Welfare Department, to the needy this month.

He said Mydin would not compromise on the quality or reduce the portion as the chicken had also been cut into eight parts.

"I'm so happy that we decided to do this. Everyone had asked if we were crazy to sell food that is usually about RM11 down at RM5.

"We will be doing this for three months first but our target is forever," he said.

Ameer who is also the President of Bumiputera Retailers Association said members were equally keen to join in to offer the Menu Rahmah.

He also called on more food operators, particularly fast food restaurants and kopitiam, to join in and play a part in the initiative.
