Six killed, eight injured in Genting van mishap

BENTONG: Six people were killed while eight others were injured when the van they were travelling in skidded at Km 4.8 of Jalan Genting Highlands near here today.

Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Saufi Zakaria said 14 people including 12 women and two men were travelling downhill when the accident occurred at 1.15pm.

"Five women and the male van driver were killed on the spot. Firemen used rescue tools to extricate the victims from the wreckage.

"The medical team took the injured victims to hospital while the six bodies were handed to the police," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a State Fire and Rescue department spokesman said the van was ferrying a group of senior citizens believed to be from Kedah who had gone to the highlands for vacation and were on their way home when the accident occurred.

"The accident did not involve any other vehicles. All the injured victims and remains of the dead victims were taken to Bentong Hospital," he said.
