KUALA LUMPUR: The 'Menu Rahmah' initiative which offers food at a price of RM5 and below is also attracting the interest of other sectors, including healthcare, to provide cheap prices to those in need, especially the B40.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said there are medical doctors with their own clinics intending to offer family packages at reasonable prices for the B40 group through 'Klinik Rahmah'.
"To implement this, we need to collaborate with the Health Ministry," he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama Radio's Jendela Fikir programme today (Feb 9).
He said his ministry had also met with several fast-food restaurant operators to get their participation in the 'Menu Rahmah' initiative.
"We have engaged with several restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King and the results can be said to be positive. There will probably be a Rahmah Burger worth RM5 (at these outlets)," he added.
Meanwhile, he said the 'Menu Rahmah' initiative, which started with rice, side dishes and vegetables, has expanded to include other food items, such as noodles as well as chicken chop and durian, which can be bought for RM5.
Based on the feedback from the majority of traders who provide the Menu Rahmah, he said, they were still able to make profits.
The Menu Rahmah was launched last Jan 31, with the participation of 15,000 food-selling premises in an effort to help reduce the cost of living, especially for the low-income group.
Regarding the cost and supply of raw materials, Salahuddin said the supply of chicken is expected to be sufficient after the end of the monsoon season, while egg supplies will be back to normal within two to three months time.
"Currently, to overcome the shortage of chicken eggs, the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry has imported chicken eggs from India," he said. – BERNAMA
