Tenant 'hoards' animal carcasses at rented condo unit

KUALA LUMPUR: A landlord made a gruesome discovery of animal carcasses littering a condominium unit in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras, rented to a local man in his 30s on March 11.

The tenant from hell was alleged to have a morbid hobby of killing animals, primarily cats. The discovery came to light when residents at the said condominium complained of foul stench from the unit.

Animal crime analyst and Malaysia Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika said the condominium management contacted the unit owner, who came to check and found the carcasses.

"It was understood that the homeowner came across tens of cat skeletons, organs and carcasses.

"There were also chopped up body parts of animals as well as minced meat in the unit," he said, adding that the unit was in a deplorable state covered with blood stains.

Arie said there was a room filled with animal carcasses, believed to be cats, in the late stages of decomposition.

The homeowner lodged a report at the Salak South police station on March 13.

"The case will be investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming animals.

"Although the species of the dead animals are unknown, they are likely to be cats based on their physical shape and bones.

"A report was also lodged with the Malaysia Animal Association, and we have extended it to the Putrajaya Veterinary Services Department's Animal Welfare Board Section chief so that an investigation can be done swiftly, comprehensively and holistically," he said.

He added that any allegations of animal cruelty which led to cats being killed in tragic and horrific manners must be verified and investigated.

"If it is true there are elements of cruelty, the association demands that the culprit be hauled to court and charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2015," he said.
