During the 9.47am incident in Jalan Nenasi-Rompin near Merchong, Pekan, the male pedestrian was killed on the spot, as the car driver lost control of his vehicle and hit him before plunging into a nearby river, said Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria.

He said eight of his men from Nenasi Fire and Rescue Station were despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Zulfadli said the car driver managed to escape from his vehicle with minor injuries. But the woman, who was a passenger, had also managed to get out of the car after the crash, but was swept away by the river.

The pedestrian's body was taken to the Pekan Hospital forensic unit for post-mortem and a search-and-rescue operation (SAR) was launched to locate the missing woman.

The SAR operation was being conducted along the river with the assistance of five personnel from Kuantan Fire and Rescue Department's water rescue team, and three others from Rompin using a rescue boat.
