Education Ministry waiting for report on 3 Perlis brothers [NSTTV]

NIBONG TEBAL: The Education Ministry is waiting for a full report on a case of three teenage brothers who are believed to be victims of abuse in Perlis.

Minister Fadhlina Sidek said she was informed of the incident which involved the boys and was told that several agencies were assisting them.

"I have not received a report (on the incident affecting the three brothers) although I was informed of the news.

"We are checking about their condition, and at the moment (the efforts to help them) fall under the jurisdiction of other ministries following their rescue.

"On our side (Education Ministry), we will check their (education status) and whether they are in school or not. At this point in time, we can only see they were not in proper condition," she said when asked to comment on whether the three brothers were schooling.

Fadhlina, who is Nibong Tebal member of parliament, was speaking to reporters after a buka puasa event with students and the community at Universiti Sains Malaysia Engineering Campus' Islamic Centre here last night.

Passers-by found three teenage brothers, aged 13 to 16 who were believed to be victims of abuse, roaming around Jalan Kampung Tambun Tulang in Simpang Empat near Kangar, Perlis at 11.55pm on Friday.

District district police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusof said two of the siblings were chained together at the ankles, and were believed to be persons with disabilities.

Initial investigations showed the boys were allegedly confined and chained in a house by their 46-year-old mother.

Police believe the brothers may have ran away from the house because they could not endure further mistreatment.

The boys' mother and a 31-year-old man, whose relation to the family is yet unknown, have been detained to facilitate investigations under under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

The duo have been remanded for a week until March 31.
