Opposition MPs submit motion to discuss Anwar's Saudi visit

KUALA LUMPUR: Several Opposition members of parliament have submitted motions to adjourn the Dewan Rakyat sitting to discuss Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the prime minister must explain and clarify the outcome of his official visit to the country.

He added the explanation was necessary as it seemed anwar was given a 'cold reception' in Saudi Arabia as he failed to get an audience with King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed Salman Al-Saud during the official visit.

"We consider it as a failed visit as it contradicts what was declared by Wisma Putra, which stated the prime minister was going on the official visit based on an invitation made by the Saudi King.

"However, there was no official audience with the King compared to when Pagoh (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) went there on an official visit in 2021," he said at a press conference in Parliament, today.

He added that during Muhyiddin's official visit previously, the former prime minister was welcomed by the crown prince upon his arrival and successfully held a face-to-face meeting to discuss diplomatic agendas for both countries.

"During his visit, Pagoh managed to add another 10,000 haj quota....the Saudi government also showed interest to purchase palm oil among others.

"His visit was successful, the protocol was clear," he said.

Wan Fayshal also urged Anwar to clarify the matter during the prime minister's question time tomorrow.

Anwar began his visit to the kingdom on Wednesday where he was accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi yesterday said the trip was successful despite Anwar not having an audience with King Salman.
