PETALING JAYA: Taxpayers dissatisfied with the decision to end the tax relief for depositors in the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) can bring it up with the government.
"I feel the people and taxpayers themselves can voice out to the government that they want a review of the decision," said Inland Revenue Board chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Nizom Sairi.
"On our part, we convey the feedback from the people to the government. This is to ensure the policies (implemented) have their finger on the pulse of the people," he added.
Nizom said the government had in the past two years offered tax relief of up to RM8,000 to SSPN depositors with the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to encourage parents to save for their childrens' education.
"However, this year the government has stopped it and this means those who save with SSPN will not be eligible for the tax relief.
"IRB will implement what was decided at the government policy level," he said after a corporate visit to Media Prima Bhd in Sri Pentas, here, today.
It was reported that deputy finance minister Steven Sim said the government would not extend the tax relief for several reasons.
These included the two per cent cut in individual income tax, an increase in tax relief for medical expenses and the PTPTN loan repayment moratorium for those earning less than RM1,800.
