Accident caused by SUV chasing down car left one dead, two seriously injured

BATU PAHAT: The action of the driver of a Mazda CX5 sport utility vehicle (SUV) in chasing down a Proton Wira ended in tragedy as it ended in an accident at Jalan Parit Jalil in Parit Sulong here on Monday afternoon which left one dead and two seriously injured.

Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah said in the 3.30 pm accident, the driver of the CX5, who is a factory owner, was angry after he suspected that the passenger of the Wira had taken his mobile phone.

"When they arrived at the scene, the 31-year old suspect, who was alone, had lost control of the vehicle and rammed the rear of the Wira, which was driven by a 39-year old man with a 43-year old passenger on the front seat," said Ismail in a Press conference at the district police headquarters.

Because of the collision, the Wira had swerved into the opposite lane and collided with a Perodua Axia.

"The collision killed the passenger of the Wira while the driver escaped with light injuries. The couple that was in the Axia was seriously injured and is currently being treated at the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital."

Ismail said the suspect was not injured but no arrest was made.

"Witnesses are urged to help in the investigation by contacting the investigating officer Inspector Muhammad Asma'i Md Yusuff at 013-6550128.

Meanwhile, Senior Fire Officer II Badrul Hisyam Loi Abdullah said six fire engines from the Batu Pahat and Yong Peng stations were despatched to the scene.

"One victim was trapped in a vehicle while the other victims managed to escape before we arrived.

"We managed to free the victim using specialised tools and he was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical personnel."
