Zahid, Ali Rustam meet this morning regarding Melaka CM post

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Melaka Chief Minister will be named today after a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam.

The meeting expected to be held at 10am will discuss candidates for the new Chief Minister following the resignation of Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

It is understood that the decision for a change in the chief minister post was made following a meeting Zahid held with between Sulaiman, who is the Masjid Tanah Umno division deputy chief and Lendu assemblyman.

Word about a change in the Melaka government leadership began soon after the state election , which was held on Nov 20, 2021. At that time Barisan Nasional scored a huge win by winning 21 out of the 28-seat state assembly in the state polls.

Last night, Zahid confirmed that Sulaiman had resigned as the chief minister, bringing an end to rumours regarding the state's politics.

Zahid had also said that Sulaiman is expected to officially resign today.

It is widely speculated that Melaka Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh will take over the chief minister post.

Melaka Umno's sources had also revealed last night that an oath-taking ceremony by Rauf is expected to be held on Friday in front of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

Rauf was also tight-lipped about the matter when the media contacted him last night.

"Has there been an official confirmation? I refuse to comment further until the official information," he told Berita Harian.
