Education Ministry identifies six subjects facing teacher shortage [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has identified six subjects that need more teachers, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying said the subjects were Bahasa Malaysia, English, Islamic Studies, Design and Technology, Visual Arts Education and History.

"We are aware there is a shortage of teachers. The ministry recruited 22,327 teachers through the one-off and subject cluster methods between 2021 and January 2023.

"We have plans to recruit teachers from April to June this year. We will recruit teachers outside of universities," she said in reply to a question by Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (Perikatan Nasional-Sik).

Lim said the recruitment of teachers depended on vacancies and the needs of subject options.

In reply to a supplementary question by Vivian Wong Shir Yee (Pakatan Harapan-Sandakan) on the fate of graduates who failed the Education Service Commission (SPP) interview, Lim said they could reapply through mySPP six months after the results were posted on the SPP portal.

She said unsuccessful candidates could reapply until they reached age 45.
