MetMalaysia warns Kedahans of heatwave

ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a heatwave warning for most parts of Kedah, with temperatures expected to soar up to a scorching 37 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are expected to remain between a range of 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, affecting Padang Terap, Kubang Pasu, Kota Star, Pendang, Sik and Kuala Muda districts.

The heatwave has been classified as a Level 1 warning and will be in effect till April 3, despite the monsoon transition phase.

Kedah MetMalaysia director Muhammad Khalil Abd Aziz said the phenomenon was due to the lingering impact of high temperatures from the end of the Northeast monsoon season.

"Typically, towards the end of the Northeast monsoon season, temperatures in the northern region of the peninsula remain relatively high, despite the onset of the monsoon transition phase.

"However, we do not expect this situation to last long, as the signs of the incoming monsoon transition phase are becoming more apparent.

"For instance, we are witnessing the formation of storm lines in the early morning in the Straits of Malacca and the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula," he told the New Straits Times.

Khalil added that the prevailing weather conditions also increase the probability of various hazardous weather phenomena.

"With weak winds during the transition phase of the monsoon, the relatively high temperature could increase the probability of thunderstorms, tornadoes, water spouts, heavy rain, flash floods, and hail," he added.

Meanwhile, state Health Department director Dr Othman Warijo advised the public to take additional precautions during the heatwave.

"Outdoor activities should be restricted, particularly for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, children and individuals with underlying health conditions.

"However, if it's necessary, please wear loose clothing and shady hats for sun protection when outdoors, and take showers to cool down afterwards.

"For those who are fasting, it's important to drink plenty of water during sahur and iftar, adults should aim to drink at least six glasses of water. Remember to always drink water during sahur to stay hydrated throughout the day," he added

Dr Othman also advised the public to get proper medical assistance in severe cases of heat stroke.

"High temperatures can put a physical strain on the human body. The effects on health can range from mild to fatal, particularly in the case of severe heat strokes.

"If the heat stroke case is severe, please rush to the nearest hospital or health clinic to receive medical treatment," he added.
