Energy Commission of Sabah launches programme to encourage consumers to use solar energy

KOTA KINABALU: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has launched a programme to encourage consumers to use solar energy.

Dubbed as Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System for Self-Consumption in Sabah (SELCP-PV Sabah), ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the renewable energy source allows electricity users to generate electricity for their own use.

The solar PV systems would mainly be installed on the roof structure of their respective buildings.

"This will help reduce their electricity consumption from the grid resulting in savings in electricity bills and reduction of carbon footprint," he said in a statement.

He added that the widespread implementation of SELCO-PV SABAH is expected to reduce the peak load on the grid.

Abdul Nasser also said that such a programme would help to provide relief to the generation reserve margin, which is currently inadequate, especially during the day where the high load demand occurs between 11am to 4pm.

He also explained that with the implementation of SELCO-PV, Sabah is expected to increase the mix of renewable energy generation in the state which is currently at 7 per cent.

"This initiative aligns with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), launched in September last year."

The application for the programme can be made online by referring to the "Frequently Asked Questions" provided on the ECoS website at www.ecos.gov.my.
