BALIK PULAU: To address the growing issue of unauthorised businesses and structures on public sidewalks, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) conducted a joint enforcement and demolition operation in the southwest district yesterday.
The operation led to the demolition of 11 illegal structures, mostly used by foreign nationals for business activities.
A combined team from several departments led the enforcement, with key agencies such as the police, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBA) also involved to ensure the operation's smooth execution and safety.
According to the city council, the targeted structures, located along public walkways, were found to violate the Street, Drainage, and Building Act 1974, with many of them obstructing pedestrian pathways and traffic flow.
"The demolition is part of the city council's ongoing efforts to address unauthorised businesses operated by foreign nationals, which have been a growing concern for both public safety and local businesses.
"These structures have long posed hazards to pedestrians, obstructed traffic, and created an unsightly environment along the city's sidewalks," it said.
MBPP said they remained committed to taking firm action against illegal structures, highlighting the negative impact such constructions have on public spaces, safety, and the overall quality of life for residents.
"The MBPP will continue to strictly enforce demolitions of unauthorised structures.
"These actions not only improve the cleanliness and safety of our environment but also ensure smooth traffic flow and safeguard public utilities," it said.
