RANAU: The son of a police officer tragically drowned in the Nopungan River, Kampung Minihas, last night (Jan 18).

The 11-year-old boy was discovered by villagers at 8.05pm, some 500 metres from his home.

District police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said the boy had left home alone at 12.30pm, and his absence was noticed by his father at 5.40pm.

"Initial investigations revealed the river was about two metres deep with whirlpools, though the current appeared normal at the time of the incident," he said when contacted today (Jan 19).

It remains unclear whether the victim was swimming when the tragedy occurred.

"The victim was found by villagers involved in the search and taken to his family home. He was later pronounced dead by a doctor from the Lohan Health Clinic at 9.10pm," he added.

It is understood that the victim was the child of a police officer stationed at the Ranau District Police Headquarters (IPD).
