'Ham and cheese' sandwich DNA test report to be ready tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The DNA test report for the 'ham and cheese' sandwich allegedly sold at a convenience store recently and was claimed to be not non-halal is expected to be out tomorrow.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh said the sample was sent to the Chemistry Department last week and the finding would likely be announced tomorrow.

"It is expected tomorrow," Fuziah told 'Berita Harian' in a brief reply to a question by BH today.

Earlier, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar had said that KPDN would be in charge of announcing the decision regarding the product's findings.Last week it was reported that the 'ham and cheese' sandwich sample, which allegedly misused the halal logo, was sent to a laboratory for a DNA test to see whether it contained any non-halal ingredients.

KPDN Enforcement girector-general Datuk Azman Adam was quoted as saying that the test was being conducted to detect any pig DNA in the product.

He also confirmed that verification from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) on the Halal Certification (SPHM) for the company under investigation had already been obtained to support the case.

Eartlier today in George Town, Penang Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said authorities will take the necessary follow-up action.

Zahid who is also the chairman of the Malaysian Halal Council with a close working relationship with Jakim, had made recommendations to ensure that matters involving religion are avoided.
