UM retains top spot as leading institution in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) has cemented its position as Malaysia's top university in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, making history with its first-ever inclusion of the Law field in the 151–175 global rankings.

In a statement, UM said that eight out of its 11 subject categories achieved the highest rankings in the country, including Business and Economics, Medicine and Health, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Life Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences.

"The university's performance in these fields, alongside improvements in its global rankings across five areas, reflects UM's continued dedication to academic excellence, impactful research, and education that drives meaningful change," the statement said.

UM's vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman expressed pride in the university's achievements, particularly in the Law field, emphasising UM's commitment to world-class quality and academic standards.

He said that this recognition showcased the university's dedication to providing top-tier education, fostering academic excellence, and contributing to global society.

"This ranking success is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire UM community — our academic and research staff, as well as our non-academic workforce, all of whom work tirelessly to meet our internal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

"It reflects our mission to create new successes for the world and contribute to the advancement of civilisation," he said.

Last year, UM rose to 60th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025, entering the top 100 universities globally.

In 2023, UM ranked 65th, with significant improvements attributed to job outcomes indicators and a higher ratio of faculty members to international students.
