12-year-old killed, five family members injured after MPV rams into lorry

MARAN: A 12-year-old boy was killed and five of his family members were injured after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a stationary trailer at Km 164 of the East Coast Expressway near here today.

Front seat passenger Muhammad Al Amin Mohd Adi, 12, died on the spot in the 1.50am accident.

His 41-year-old father, who was driving the MPV, his 42-year-old mother, seated in the rear passenger seat, and three younger brothers aged 10, eight, and 21 months sustained injuries.

District police chief Superintendent Wong Kim Wai said investigations revealed the MPV was travelling from Kuala Lumpur towards Kuala Terengganu when the crash occurred.

"The MPV driver is believed to have crashed into the rear of a parked trailer that was stationary on the emergency lane due to a flat tyre," he said in a statement today.

"Checks at the scene found that the lorry driver, who stopped to replace the tyre, had placed safety cones behind the vehicle to warn other road users," Wong added.

Wong said Al Amin succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other family members were taken to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh.

The 35-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt, and the case is being investigated for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
