Political crisis: Day 3

KUALA LUMPUR: The political crisis in Malaysia which started on Sunday has now entered Day 3. While Day 1 was rife with speculation and nothing more, Day 2 was more frenzied with the resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman. He was then appointed interim PM pending the appointment of a new prime minister.

Several top PKR leaders quit the party and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to the dissolution of the Cabinet.

The crisis is now in its third day, with a lot of movement so far, but no official announcements on the latest developments yet.

Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail arrived at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Putrajaya at 10.25am.

She is accompanied by her eldest daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is Permatang Pauh member of Parliament.

Dr Mahathir arrived at the PMO at 9.29am.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) top leaders have arrived at interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's private residence at The Mines Residence.

Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin arrived at 8.05am, followed by his deputy Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir at about 8.10am.

It is believed that Bersatu top leaders are visiting the ex Bersatu chairman after the party rejected his resignation after an emergency meeting held last night.

Dr Mahathir tendered his resignation to the King yesterday and was later appointed as the interim Prime Minister.

He had also resigned as Bersatu chairman.

Last night, Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen said the party's leadership would appeal to Dr Mahathir to return to lead the country's administration.

“We will appeal tomorrow morning. We want Dr Mahathir to be appointed as the eighth Prime Minister,” he told the NSTP.

At about 9.15am, Dr Mahathir was seen leaving his private residence.

It is believed that he is heading to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Putrajaya.

He left with only his officers through Gate B of the The Mines' Residence without the presence of other Bersatu leaders.

Muhyiddin left the premises at 9.36pm.

It is learned that he would be attending a closed-door meeting with the presidents of Umno, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan).

However it is not known where the meeting will take place.

Several other Bersatu leaders have also left Dr Mahathir's residence.

It is believed they are heading to Putrajaya.

Spotted were Bersatu Srikandi chief Datuk Seri Rina Harun and Terengganu Bersatu chairman Datuk Razali Idris.

Also seen leaving was Dr Mahathir's communications and media adviser Datuk A Kadir Jasin.
