Dr Afif admits being pressured to relinquish exco post [NSTTV]

GEORGE TOWN: Dr Afif Bahardin, who resigned as a state executive council member earlier today, said he had done so after accepting views and advice from Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

In a press statement issued this afternoon, Dr Afif said he met with Chow this morning to discuss his position in the state government as a state executive council member.

“In the meeting, I accepted his views and advice for me to relinquish my post,” he said in the statement.

Dr Afif also expressed his highest appreciation to Chow, the state, and the people for placing their trust in him to serve for the past seven years since 2013.

“I want to reiterate my commitment to continue serving the people of Seberang Jaya in my capacity as their state assemblyman,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference later, Dr Afif admitted to being pressured by various quarters to relinquish his post.

He said he had been pressured to do so by the party leadership at the national and state level after the internal political crisis within the party.

“I have been observing since a few days ago, and I believe there is pressure at the state and national level for me to give up my state executive council member position,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued by acting state PKR chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, he said the party took note of Dr Afif’s decision.

“We also understand that his resignation was upon the advice of the Chief Minister.

“We thanked him for his services all this while in his capacity as the state executive council member,” he added.
