Umno, Pas agree to register Muafakat Nasional

KUALA LUMPUR: The loose political cooperation between Umno and Pas, Muafakat Nasional (MN), will be formally registered as part of the parties' effort to strengthen its ties and support.

The statement came following Umno postponing its meetings with Pas scheduled for yesterday night as well as the party's Janda Baik meeting today.

"The Muafakat Nasional steering committee meeting scheduled for yesterday, Oct 19 was postponed following the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order especially in Kuala Lumpur to curb the spread of the Covid-19.

"The MN leadership has collectively agreed to commit to further strengthen the unity and cooperation between parties as preparations ahead of the 15th General Election.

"The leadership of both parties has agreed to formally register MN with the Registrar of Societies."

The statement was signed by Tan Sri Annuar Musa of Umno as the MN secretary-general I and Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan of Pas as the secretary-general II.

After the collapse of the Barisan Nasional government in 2018, Umno and Pas have been working together under MN but refused to turn it into a

formal cooperation until today.

They then joined the Perikatan Nasional government, but less than a year of being in Putrajaya, talks on them leaving Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia grew louder.

Recently, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed that he has sufficient majority to take over the government but the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has reminded all politicians to deal with the issue democratically instead of calling for a fresh election amid the pandemic.
