Hadi: Those disrupting state of emergency implementation 'must be dealt with'

KUALA LUMPUR: Any attempt to disrupt the implementation of the state of emergency and the government's efforts in controlling the spread of Covid-19 must be addressed rigorously, Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said.

The Marang Member of Parliament said the people's health and safety should be everyone's priority at the moment, instead of getting caught up in attempts to create conflicts.

"The last thing we should do now is argue about who wants to be the prime minister or who should be appointed, or about the majority in Parliament.

"These are all nonsensical and insensitive (behaviour), when the current pandemic is affecting the people. This must be rejected and prevented. Anything that can interfere with this emergency proclamation must be dealt with in a strict manner," he said.

Abdul Hadi said this in a speech during a webinar session titled "Emergency Proclamation: Is it a necessity?" organised by the Gerakan Pembela Ummah today.

Also present for the webinar was Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, Constitutional Bureau and Malay Consultative Council chairman Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, and Research Fellow (Law and Constitution) Perdana Policy Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Dr Muhammad Fathi Yusof.

Abdul Hadi, who is also the Prime Minister's special envoy to the Middle East, reiterated the government's narrative that the current state of emergency was implemented for the sake of the people.

"Given the circumstances, an emergency must be declared immediately. Whether or not this emergency should be ended or continued, can be discussed.

"The government is doing this to stop the chain of infection. Everything is written in Islam. So don't be hesitant, doubtful or sceptical. We all have our responsibilities toward the country," he said.
