Umno president, party MPs gather at Wisma Perwira

KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno meeting involving party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and a group of its members of parliament was held last night.

According to sources, the two-hour meeting, which started around 9pm, was organised by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at Wisma Perwira here.

It is believed the meeting was to mediate tension felt among some Umno parliamentarians, who had previously called for the party's exit from Perikatan Nasional (PN) before Aug 1.

The media has been camping near the Wisma Perwira carpark area since information about the meeting had been circulated.

Zahid and former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak were also seen entering the building.

So far, the New Straits Times attempt to obtain more information on the meeting from the politicians were unsuccessful.

On June 21, Zahid gave PN a 14-day ultimatum to convene Parliament and he said that any failure to do so was viewed as insolence towards the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's decree on the matter and was disrespectful to the Conference of Rulers.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement that the Dewan Rakyat will reconvene for five days starting July 26; while Dewan Negara will convene for three days from Aug 3 to 5.
