Zahid: Umno to demand Muhyiddin, Takiyuddin's resignation

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party will call for the resignation of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Minister in Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

This, he said, was due to the "treasonous" act against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as well as for failing to uphold the principles of the Federal Constitution.

Zahid said the party regretted the prime minister's decision in going against the wish of the King, who had wanted all Emergency Ordinances debated and discussed in Parliament, in line with Article of 150(3) of the Federal Constitution.

"What is even more regrettable is that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong himself had proclaimed how the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances, as announced by the law minister on Monday in Parliament, was misleading as the fact is, it has yet to receive consent from the King.

"This is clearly an act of treason to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and goes against the principles of the Constitution. As such, Umno will ask Muhyiddin and Takiyuddin to step down with dignity," he said in a statement.

Istana Negara, in a statement today, said that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah was "extremely disappointed" with Takiyuddin's statement on Monday that the Emergency Ordinances had been revoked.

It said Article 150(2B) read together with Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution stipulated that the powers to amend and revoke the ordinances was the prerogative of the King.

It added that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong stressed that the statement made by the minister during the sitting on July 26 is not accurate and has misled members of the Dewan Rakyat.

Meanwhile, Zahid called on all Umno members of parliament (MPs) to adhere to the decision made by the party's Supreme Council working committee on July 7 to retract their support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.

"They must fulfil their oath as MPs who must demonstrate their loyalty to the King as well as uphold the Federal Constitution at all times.

"This is also in line with the party's objective to uphold the institution of the Malay Rulers as stipulated in Clause 3 of the party's constitution," he added.
