Bersatu Perlis liaison deputy chief quits party

KANAR: Perlis Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) liaison deputy chief Ameir Hassan has quit the party, on grounds that the party has been derailed from its struggle.

Ameir, who was also the party's founding member in Perlis, said he had relinquished all his posts in the party, including his position as the Arau Bersatu division chief.

He said he had conveyed his decision to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin through a letter dated Oct 15, which was sent to the party's secretary general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

"I joined the party in 2016 and was the founding member of this party in Perlis.

"I made the decision because the party has lost its direction and derailed from its struggle in championing the people.

"We fought for pride and integrity but after the 'Sheraton Move' in February last year, I saw a fraud against the people was committed in Bersatu, which led to the collapse of an elected government," he said when contacted today.

Ameir claimed that Bersatu had reduced itself to becoming a vehicle for those hungry for power, and that it disregarded the people who had supported Bersatu towards its victory before.

"The Bersatu spirit has died. We had formed Bersatu with intention to fight against corruption in Umno and Pas, but sadly today, the fundamental struggle is dead.

"The struggle for the people's future no longer exists, while pride and integrity... All I can see from what is left is the struggle to retain political power among the top leadership," he said.

The former Perlis Pakatan Harapan chairman said the situation would only get worse ahead of the next general election as the same self-struggles would be put above anything else without a clear vision for the people.

"I made this decision after mulling it for almost a year, especially after the 'Sheraton Move' and I am at loss with the party's struggle at the moment.

"To me, Bersatu should have remained in Pakatan Harapan, based on the agreement made prior to the 14th General Election. That alliance had defeated Barisan Nasional, which had ruled the country for decades, and which was polluted by corruption and kleptocracy practices," he said.

Ameir said he was not joining any political party for now, but he did not rule out a possibility of contesting for the Arau parliamentary seat in the next general election.

In the previous general election held in 2018, Ameir contested for the Pauh state seat under a Pakatan Harapan ticket, but lost to Barisan Nasional candidate, Rozieana Ahmad with a slim majority of 143 votes, in a three-cornered fight involving the third candidate from Pas, Idris Yaacob.

Meanwhile, Perlis Bersatu information chief Wan Zikri Afthar said the party would issue a statement on the matter soon.
