Special Umno meeting to decide whether to work with Pas in Johor polls

KUALA LUMPUR: The decision whether Umno will work with Pas in the upcoming Johor state election will be known after a special meeting soon.

Its Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the party leadership took note of the stand of Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) which was more inclined to contest the upcoming polls without Pas or other parties.

He said the views of Johor BN voiced by its chairman, Datuk Hasni Mohammad will be taken into account before the party's top leadership decides on Umno's approach in the Johor state election.

"That (Muafakat Nasional cooperation in the Johor polls) we have not decided yet, but according to what was mentioned by the Johor Umno liaison committee chairman who is also the Johor BN chairman, they are more likely to go it alone.

"So, we will discuss at the central committee level and will decide in our special MKT meeting on how we will deal with the Johor polls," he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex here today.

He said this when asked about Umno's stance on whether it will prioritise cooperation with Pas through Muafakat Nasional (MN) or contest the Johor polls solely under the BN banner as it did in the Melaka state election last year.

Johor Pas Commissioner, Abdullah Hussin had expressed hope that there was hope for MN in the Johor polls and informed that the party's central leadership had given the green light for the continuation of the political platform with Umno.

However, Hasni yesterday said Umno would propose to BN for the coalition to contest the Johor state polls on its own and was confident of a two-third majority.

Meanwhile, on the current situation of Umno, Mohamad was confident that the party was in a good position, but would not take it easy and needed to have a specific strategy to face the Johor polls.

He said the big victory in the Melaka state election cannot be used as a yardstick for Umno to take it easy and assume that it will win in the Johor polls.

"That is why we have to work hard in every election, especially now with new voters who are automatically registered by the Election Commission (EC).

"We don't know them, we don't know their inclination and support and whether they will all go out to vote and the likes," he said.
