Speak the truth, former Johor MB tells opponent

MUAR: Incumbent Bukit Kepong assemblyman, Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, who is seeking reelection, has lambasted a fellow candidate for making a baseless claim about a housing project in the constituency.

The Perikatan Nasional candidate, who is a former Johor menteri besar, said his opponent from Barisan Nasional (BN) Ismail Mohamed had made a statement which Sahruddin claimed was merely to gain political mileage.

Dr Sahruddin said that Ismail was making an issue out of it because the latter had contested and lost in the Pagoh parliamentary seat in the last general election.

On Saturday, Ismail said that in his bid to contest the Bukit Kepong state seat, he wanted to revive the abandoned housing project. He had also hinted that the matter was never resumed even during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administration.

Dr Sahruddin said Ismail could have done something with his position in the Pagoh Umno division.

"Throughout my service as Bukit Kepong assemblyman, I have neither seen any effort by the Pagoh Umno division chief when he was in the opposition (under PH's administration); nor when he and his party became 'partners' in the government (Perikatan Nasional government).

"I do not deny his presence, and it cannot be denied that Ismail and his team have served the people in the Pagoh Parliamentary seat, especially the Bukit Kepong state constituency. However, his actions can be seen and judged by the locals themselves.

"So I would like to ask Ismail, during his tenure as an assemblyman in the past, including when he had been a state executive council member, what contribution has he given to the community and the Bukit Kepong state constituency?" Dr Sahruddin said in a statement today.

He reminded Ismail that the development that took place in the state seat he had occupied should also be attributed to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is the Pagoh member of parliament.

He said there were too many development projects and socio-economic projects that were not carried out and even not successfully completed when Ismail was an assemblyman and state exco member.

"Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) had carried out his responsibilities well, taking care of Bukit Kepong and the Bukit Pasir constituency (formerly Jorak)."

Sahruddin said former Bukit Serampang (now known as Bukit Kepong) assemblyman Datuk Tahir Taat provided a stepping stone for Ismail as his successor.

"Therefore, speak the truth Ismail. Do not lie to the people just for political gain, or emulate the top leaders of Umno-BN or 'boss beliau.' Contest in a healthy and mature manner during this Johor state election," said Dr Sahruddin, who is the Pagoh Bersatu deputy division chief.
