Umno approves amendment to delay party polls [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The amendment to Umno's party constitution to delay party polls until after the 15th General Election (GE15) has been approved.

The consensus was reached unanimously by 2,586 Umno delegates from 192 divisions during the party's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) at the World Trade Centre here today.

When tabling the amendment earlier, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin said among the changes made was to clause 10.16 to further delay the party polls by up to six months after GE15.

This is on top of the party's previous decision to delay its scheduled election by 18 months.

"This (amendment) is to ensure that the party's entire strength can be mobilised in facing GE15 without any risk of split and disunity," he said during the EGM.

Earlier, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the amendment was not done to secure his position in the party, describing those who would believe such a claim as foolish.

Umno's election for the 2021-2023 term was due on June 30 last year but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
